Kainalu is the psychedelic funk recording project by multi-instrumentalist, Trent Prall. Trent was born in southern California but uprooted across the United States many times through his childhood. The only stable place in Trent's life lied in Honolulu, Hawaii where he spent his summers with his extended family. Trent created Kainalu as a way to pay celebrate to his Japanese Hawaiian heritage.

The sound is inspired by modern day psychedelic rock like Tame Impala, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Toro y Moi, but he also draws influence from Motown artists such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Live, Trent is joined by guitarist Joe Waldbillig, bassist Evan Nelson and drummer Matt Allen  creating a more jam oriented live interpretation of the recorded music.

Kainalu’s single, “Finding Peace Of Mind” has been featured on various premiere music blogs including Indie Shuffle, Joy of Violent Music, and BlahBlahBlahScience. The track hit #1 on Hype Machine charts, followed by his most recent release, “Folds Like Origami,” which also hit #1 consecutively. “Folds like Origami” landed on Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist and has gotten press coverage from Earmilk and tastemakers like David Dean Burkhart. Kainalu continues to perform live around the midwest, and is hoping to tour this fall after playing the Underground Music Showcase and Prism Music & Arts Festival.
